We thought we’d do a Friday show-n-tell today and get some work up that we did back in college. One of the advantages of studying architecture in a farm-town, state university like WSU or KU is that they have excellent wood shops and steel shops. We’ve rounded up 7 projects from our student days – before we had to worry about keeping the rain out and the heat in. We’re still using and enjoying most of these constructions, some of which were built over a decade ago – so to the student’s out there – get your head out of the monitor from time to time and get in that shop!

Oh, my, those are nice! LOVE the Balancing Candle Holder and the Simple Bench! Especially the bench!!!

Justin – the bench is a good prototype for repetitive design. I’ve still got the drawings for the steel brackets and can post/email them if you like.

Yeah, I’d like that. Thanks. Do send.

Yeah, I’m with Justin on this one too. That bench is ridiculously beautiful!

Might have to build myself one. If only I could weld…or had a wood shop…ho hum.

Maybe someday it will be in a catalog?

I’ve added the construction documents for the Simple Bench to the post. The one pictured is 9″ wide – I might recommend going a bit wider.

That’s brilliant. Thanks.

wow, used that exact detail (simple bench) for a ferrocement table we built my senior year, though it was about 1.5x as long. the plan was to polish it down to a terrazo-like finish, much like the kunstmuseum vaduz we had recently visited(which took 5 months to remove 6-10mm off the entire facade to get the finish) unfortunately, we weren’t as skilled but it sufficed to eat on for the year.

Mike – that sounds interesting – post a link or send some photos our way, we’d love to see it.
